'Opihi Bowl
This handcrafted ceramic bowl captures the rugged beauty of Hawaiʻi’s volcanic coastline—where black lava meets crashing waves and ʻopihi cling to the rock face. Glazed in deep earthy browns with misty white accents, its surface mimics the look of sunbaked lava, worn smooth by time and tide.
Scattered impressions across the bowl recall clusters of ʻopihi shells—small limpet-like creatures beloved in Hawaiʻi for both their resilience and cultural importance. Each mark is a quiet homage to shoreline gathering, the patience of foraging, and the connection between people and place.
With a soft gloss finish and swirling hand-textured interior, this bowl is perfect for serving fruits, salads, or local specialties—or standing alone as a sculptural reminder of the island’s elemental power.
What is Stoneware?
Stoneware pottery is fired at high temperatures to make it strong, hard, and resistant to liquids (non-porous). It is made from clay, but it is more durable than other kinds of pottery and earthenware. The reason it is called "stoneware" is because of its stone-like qualities, so you can expect something that is rugged, durable, and exudes natural feeling.
Care instructions
While stoneware and the glaze I use is 100% food-safe, microwave safe, and dishwasher friendly, to retain the beautiful colors, I do recommend hand washing and not using them in microwaves. Although stoneware is tough, it could still chip if it is bashed so please handle your pots with care.
