About Studio Tanah
At its core, Studio Tanah isn’t about what it sells — it is about what and who it connects...
It connects people
It gives people voices
It gives people a way to art
Through conscious creation, travel, and living

What is Studio Tanah
When I started the brand, I initially wanted to have a store to sell my pottery; but after I started building the online website, I realized that I needed space to sell other things too: like handmade art that we buy abroad, as well as organic dried goods that we grow on our Kaua’i homestead.
In essence, Studio Tanah grew from a pottery shop into a vehicle to connect people to the beauty of our world. It’s mission is to offer a lifestyle that is rooted deep in art, culture and traditions.
What makes us different
Conscious consumerism is a mindful approach to buying and using products - this is a consumer practice that involves intention that inevitably encourages creators to reduce waste and use more sustainable materials.
At Studio Tanah, we try our best to follow this form of consumerism. We source unique goods that are created slowly by hand, with deep intention and care. The effort it takes for the individuals that stand behind these products makes every piece we bring back to the shop even more special.
My hope is that these curated goods can leave the collector a feeling of organic connection to the pieces: an opportunity for them to feel the origins of the pieces and the culture and traditions that brought them to life. Inevitably, that person will garner a deeper bond with the things that they choose to buy. And that is special.
How we choose our vendors
We strive to ensure that the quality of products our local artisans create are on-par with something we would consider high quality and well-made. This can be challenging when you're traveling and on the move, but it is also what makes this job fun.
Growing up surrounded with Indonesian art, I have a high standard when it comes to quality stitching, painting, weaving, sculpting, and woodworking. I usually have to physically see or touch the item in order to confirm whether or not an object is of high quality. When that object fits my standard and it’s uniqueness speaks to me, I make the decision right then and there that this will be one of the vendors I buy from and represent on the site.
My preference is to choose vendors with a minimal or no US presence. For most local vendors, increasing their US presence would require quite an effort. These vendors are also the artisans — and they do not have bandwidth to sell to US market.
How this brand feeds our soul
Studio Tanah's soul is rooted deep in promoting conscious consumerism, while also empowering local artisans that beautify our world. We strive to be a part of a movement that connects global artists to people. We would like to become one of the voices that helps give them reach -- empowering those who just need the extra jump.
